ONYX provided full architectural services including rezoning entitlements for client A Community of Friends, a not-for-profit developer providing Permanent Supportive Housing in apartments for very-low-income seniors.
The property was originally zoned single-family residential, while the surrounding neighborhood developed into two- and three-story apartments decades before.
The 41 one-bedroom apartments and three-bedroom manager’s unit are configured in a staggered-wing plan, providing courts on both the north and south for pleasant outdoor environments in any season.
The design takes advantage of the deep excavation requirements by placing the parking in a subterranean garage, freeing the remaining site area for attractive landscaping, gardening and recreation courtyards.
The building includes many sustainable design features, including solar water heating, motion-activated lighting in the stairwells, continuous fresh air supply to each unit, and emergency power within each unit for medical devices.
