As the first African American woman to become a licensed architect in New York (1954) and California (1962), as well as the first Black woman to gain membership in the American Institute of Architects (AIA), Norma Merrick Sklarek paved the way for generations of architects to follow. Her career was defined by resilience, innovation, and a steadfast commitment to excellence.

Breaking Barriers, Building Legacies

Norma Merrick Sklarek’s journey was marked by determination in the face of systemic barriers. Born in 1926 in Harlem, she pursued her architectural education at Columbia University at a time when few women, and even fewer women of color, were admitted into the profession. Despite the discrimination she faced in job searches, she persevered, securing positions that would allow her to make a lasting impact on the built environment.

Throughout her career, Sklarek played a pivotal role in shaping significant projects, including the Pacific Design Center in Los Angeles, the U.S. Embassy in Tokyo, Terminal One at LAX, and the Mall of America in Minnesota. In 1985, she co-founded Siegel, Sklarek & Diamond, making it the first woman-owned architectural firm led by an African American woman. Her leadership and vision shattered ceilings and set new precedents in the profession.

Honoring Her Legacy

Norma Merrick Sklarek’s impact extends far beyond the buildings she helped design. She opened doors for underrepresented voices in architecture and proved that talent and perseverance could overcome the most entrenched barriers. Her story serves as both an inspiration and a call to action: to continue advocating for diversity, equity, and inclusion in our profession.

"To be the first in the face of adversity is to carve a path with grit and determination, making the journey less treacherous for those who follow. That is the essence of true pioneering.
The trail you blaze becomes the steppingstone for others to rise. Light it up!”
-- Natoya Ridgeway
Managing Principal at ONYX

By amplifying Sklarek’s legacy, we help ensure that the future of architecture is more inclusive, just, and representative of the communities it serves.

Let’s continue to build on the foundation she laid: one that fosters opportunity, celebrates diversity, and shapes a better world for all.
