The Foundation of CSU San Marcos wanted to test the design/build delivery mechanism to develop housing for 474 students on this new campus.
ONYX teamed with Allen & O’Hara, the developer, and Ellias Construction, the contractor, to produce the winning design for this $18.1 million project.
ONYX designed apartment-style suites for students; two apartments for residential staff; a 9,000 SF Commons Building for student services; and parking for 660 cars.
The client had several important goals for the project: scaling it to a friendly size, providing inviting outdoor spaces and creating a campus edge.
The contextual design takes advantage of the sloped site, a feature common to this hilly campus, and the materials palette carefully matches the remaining campus.
Budget, schedule, student security and quality were of utmost importance.
